It is built close to Bai Harir's Vav. The name Mate Bhawani is derived from a small shrine located in the back wall of the shaft just above the water level at the lowest step dedicated to Amba Bhavani. The well perhaps is datable to eleventh century A.D. and is in every way different from the step wells of later times. It might have belonged to karnavati town of King Karna Solanki (A.D. 1063-1093).
