The Vadodara Circle came into existence on 1st January 1985, when it was separated from the then Western Circle of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), with the states of Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Union Territories of Daman & Diu under its jurisdiction. The Vadodara Circle, with its jurisdiction in the state of Gujarat and Union Territories of Daman & Diu, is responsible for undertaking excavations and explorations here, maintenance, conservation, and preservation and promotion of 213 centrally protected monuments and sites – 202 in Gujarat, and 11 in Daman & Diu – as per provisions of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, amended as the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains (Amendment and Validation) Act, 2010, and Rules made thereunder, besides regulating export of antiquities and art treasures under the Antiquities and Art Treasures Act, 1972, and Rules framed thereto.
The Champaner - Pavagadh Archaeological Park in District Panchmahal, Gujarat, is so far the only cultural heritage site in Gujarat inscribed on the list of the World Heritage Sites of UNESCO. The Park has a total of 114 monuments and sites represented by Hindu and Jain temples, mosques, tombs, and military and secular structure like forts, gates, wells, stepwells, and so on. Under the control of the Vadodara Circle, Rani-ki-Vav, Dwarkadhish Group of Temples, Lothal, and Dholavira Diu Fort, St. Paul Church, are among the most popular monuments and sites.
Post enactment of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains (Amendment and Validation) Act, 2010, Vadodara Circle is first Circle in the country to initiate and execute an instrument of MoU signed with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) whereby while the ASI will conserve and preserve its protected monument and area of Bhadra Fort in in Ahmedabad city, AMC in collaboration with ASI will improve its surrounding area as per norms approved and laid down by the National Monument Authority, Government of India, in a true spirit of mutual understanding and shared responsibility.
